Taste

Recognizing a good solution when you see one.

They can tell the difference between a solution that works and one that's actually good.
They push back on a design that meets the requirement but would frustrate the person using it.
They know when something is done without waiting for you to say so.

Leadership

Moving a team without leaning on authority.

Engineers want to work with them, because they leave the team clear on what we're building and why.
They can get alignment across teams they don't manage.
When priorities change, they carry the team through it rather than only relaying the change.

Communication

Explaining a decision so the business and engineering both land in the same place.

After they explain a decision, the business side and engineering agree on what it means.
They can explain a technical tradeoff to you without a glossary.
You rarely have to re-explain their roadmap to anyone.
